By: the_home_for_wayward_records
09/2021
Record Store Day has been pretty kind to metal over the years, but this year, if classic 80’s metal is your thing, you are very much in luck. There are a number of great artists getting some love this year, including Dio, Ozzy, Poison and Aerosmith. DOn’t sleep on these because the metal stuff sells out pretty fast.
AEROSMITH - 1971: The Road Starts Hear - Recorded on Joe Perry’s boom box in their rehearsal space, this 7 track, 8 song LP features the band 2 years before their debut album, banging away at future hits Mama Kin, Dream On and a few others. Not many times do we get to hear such a classic rock band in this embryonic state.

ALICE COOPER - Brutal Planet - The fourteenth solo album from Alice, originally released in 2011, and the first 45 RPM pressing. Coming first to record stores for RSD Black Friday on “color in color” double vinyl.

The Clash - If Music Could Talk
If Music Could Talk is a 1980 interview album with The Clash - Joe Strummer, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon and Topper Headon – in brief conversation with their trusted management rep/fixer/consigliere Kosmo Vinyl. Originally only available as a promotional LP for US radio ahead of the release of The Clash’s 4th album Sandinista!, If Music Could Talk will be released for the first time as a limited edition double 180g vinyl package with new artwork as part of RSD Drops. If Music Could Talk features the band talking about and introducing tracks, along with those tracks themselves (using the latest band-approved remasters). This may be the item in this drop that I’m the most excited about. 3600 pressed.

The Cure - Wild Mood Swings
One thing we can guarantee is that The Cure will put out a picture disc on RSD and they’ve done one in both drops this year. The Cure’s tenth studio album Wild Mood Swings marks its 25th Anniversary this year and to celebrate, the album – which features the singles “The 13th”, “Mint Car”, “Strange Attraction” and “Gone!” – will be pressed on double picture disc for the very first time. The new pressing has been overseen by Robert Smith and will be available exclusively for RSD Drops 2021. The recent Faith and Seventeen Seconds picture discs have sounded pretty good, so I’m a bit excited about this one. 8000 pressed.
Czarface - Czar Noir
Czarface delivers a fresh action adventure in the form of an all new Czarface comic, Czar Noir, packaged with an exclusive vinyl soundtrack. In the spirit of the highly sought-after Power Records series from the ‘70s, you can read along with the comic and hear the story come to life on vinyl. Aretha Franklin - Oh Me Oh My: Aretha Live in Philly 1972
Oh Me Oh My: Aretha Live In Philly, 1972 is a shining example of the Queen of Soul at her best. The nearly hour-long performance – recorded live at the National Association Of Television & Radio Announcers Convention in Philadelphia, PA, USA, 1972 – features the first live performances of many of Aretha’s landmark hits. The live recording took place shortly after the release of her Grammy™ Award winning studio album Young Gifted and Black and features the album’s two Top 10 (USA) singles, penned by Aretha, “Rock Steady” and “Day Dreaming”. Plus, stunning covers woven into medleys of “I Never Loved A Man (The Way That I Love You) / I Say a Little Prayer”, “Bridge Over Troubled Water / We’ve Only Just Begun” and a glorious rendition of Aretha’s anthem “Respect”. KMD - Mister Hood (30th Anniversary Edition)
One of my favorite albums and the career start for MF Doom, Mister Hood is a phenomenal album. KMD (Kausing Much Damage, or a positive Kause in a Much Damaged society) was the early ‘90s hip-hop group that served as a launching pad for the career of the artist we now know as MF DOOM (known during his KMD tenure as Zev Love X). In the 30 years since Mr. Hood was released so much has changed in the world and the world of hip-hop but this recording has maintained an ageless appeal with DOOM becoming an artist of legendary stature. 2000 pressed on tri color vinyl.
Mr. Big - Lean Into It

As a bass player, Im all in for anything featuring BIlly Sheehan. 500 pressed.
Pearl Jam - Alive (Cassette & 12” LP)
2021 marks the 30th anniversary of Pearl Jam’s iconic debut album Ten. “Alive” was the first single off the album and 30 years later it’s being reissued as both a 12” and a cassette single. The 12” features the original promo single version of “Alive” plus three rare b-sides: “Wash”, “Dirty Frank” and the Beatles’ cover “I’ve Got A Feeling”, which is currently not available anywhere else. All four tracks are included on side A while side B contains an etching of the band’s Stick Man logo. Wash is one of my favorite PJ songs. 18000 pressed.
John Prine - Live at the Other End, December 1975 (4LP)
I’m still incredibly sad that we lost John Prine due to Covid in 2020, but at least he’s seeing quite a bit of love on RSD recently. In December 1975, Grammy award-winning songwriter John Prine played three nights at The Other End (previously and now known as The Bitter End) in Greenwich Village, NYC. The acoustic performances featured some of his best-known songs such as “Angel From Montgomery” and “Hello In There”, from his first four studio albums: John Prine (1971), Diamonds In The Rough (1972), Sweet Revenge (1973) and Common Sense (1975). These rare and previously unreleased solo performances—comprising two full sets—will now be made available, pressed on 180g black vinyl, exclusively RSD Drops 2021. 8500 pressed.
Ramones - triple J: Live in Sydney, July 8, 1980

Lou Reed’s ‘Set the Twilight Reeling’ celebrates its 25th Anniversary with a double LP pressing for the first time. This exclusive edition, pressed on heavyweight audiophile vinyl, features 3 sides of audio with an etching on side four. 2500 pressed.

The Soft Bulletin is one of the Flaming Lips’ most popular and best-selling albums. The Soft Bulletin Companion was originally available as a promo-only CD, hand-made by the Lips’ management, and given to media and radio as the original album grew in popularity around its original release. The compilation includes unreleased songs from the era, plus outtakes and early mixes, B-sides, international bonus tracks and stereo versions of Zaireeka tracks. This silver-colored, double LP comes to record stores first as part of RSD Drops. 11250 Pressed/Record Store Day First Pressing
Fontaines DC - Live at Kilmainham Gaol
I love both Fontaines DC albums, so this album is a must buy for me. This live set was recorded in the summer of 2020 in Dublin's historic Kilmainham Gaol. It is a ten song document of some of their best work to date put down on 180g vinyl in a gatefold jacket with an essay by author and historian Donal Fallon. 3500 Pressed/Record Store Day Exclusive

“Things are improving but in this continued “unprecedented global situation”, where production and shipping is still in a state of struggle, the focus of these two Drops dates is on bringing revenue to the stores-- as well as to the artists, labels, distribution and every other business behind the scenes making record stores work, in a fiscally and socially responsible way. The spread of titles over two dates in two months allows some flexibility for the struggling vinyl pressing plants and distribution companies as well as provide stores time to prepare budgets and place the orders that safely get music into the hands of customers on a larger than normal release day.”
Honestly, I liked having it split up a bit last year and I know I spent more money that way, which is really good for record stores too.
So what’s coming out? Well, there’s some great things coming and as it gets closer, I’ll go into detail about some of these titles. Until then, here’s a quick overview of some cool things coming for both days.
