Nick Cave & Warren Ellis - Carnage

I absolutely love everything Nick Cave has done, but even I was blown away by how amazing this new LP is. Written, recorded and completed during lockdown, CARNAGE is the first studio album from Nick Cave & Warren Ellis working together outside of Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. The 8 track album was released digitally on February 25, 2021.  Cave describes the album as 'A brutal but very beautiful record nested in a communal catastrophe'. Cave & Ellis' sonic and lyrical adventurism continues apace on Carnage, an album that emerged almost by accident out of the downtime created by the long, anxious, global emergency. Carnage is a record for these uncertain times - one shot through with moments of distilled beauty and that resonates with an almost defiant sense of hope.

Amethyst Kiah - Wary + Strange

I discovered Amythyst Kiah when she dropped her debut Ep, Amethyst Kiah & Her Chest of Glass. Between her beautiful & soulful voice and its instrumentation, it was an immediate favorite of mine. Her new LP and Rounder Records debut, Wary + Strange, blends more modern sounds into her roots/blue beginnings. Her voice reminds me of Brazos Valley’s own Ruby Foster, so this is definitely one you should check out.

Clutch - Blast Tyrant

A classic amongst a number of Clutch classics, Blast Tyrant is a tour de force. This new remaster is part of their Weathermaker Music series. It’s a limited edition, 2LP, colored vinyl release with a signed & numbered insert. Check out the tracks Profits of Doom or my favorite, (Notes from the Trial of) La Curandera.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Demos Vols 1&2

King Gizzard put out around 320 albums a year, or at least that’s how it feels, so I had to check and make sure this was new. Demos Vols. 1&2 was released digitally last September, but makes its vinyl debut this week on Drastic Plastic Records. 18 tracks & demo versions of released songs, spread across two 140g LPs, should be enough to satisfy those rabid King Gizzard fans, of which there are many.

Zapp & Roger - All The Greatest Hits

If you love 80’s funk, there’s not much better than Zapp & Roger. Even if you aren’t sure you’ve ever heard of Zapp & Roger, their samples have been the basis for hit after hit on the Rap & R&B charts. From More Bounce to the Ounce to Doo Waa Ditty(Blow That Thing) their songs are interwoven into the very core of Hip Hop since its start. I’m picking this up and thinking back to those early 80’s roller skating days of my youth.
