The comprehensive guide to british music of the beat R&B Psychedelic and progressive Eras 1963-1976 - Used paperback book

As this is a guide to British rock and pop in this era, entries are largely confined to British-born artists. To qualify for an entry they had to release vinyl, or at least cut some demos. I've taken the liberty of including several musicians and bands from Ireland and l've also included a limited number of artists - such as The Easybeats, Jimi Hendrix, Gary Wright and Mark Wirtz- who weren't British by birth, but were based in Britain when they’ve, achieved their success and were an integral part of the tapestry of British rock and pop in this era. A case could possibly have been made for including several others, but constraint of space has made this impossible.

This is a vast volume, with over 2,750 entries and, for reasons of space, a comparatively limited number of mainstream pop artists (mostly ballad singers) have had to be omitted. A list of the more significant (in terms of record sales) omissions, many of whom you can read about in other music encyclopedias, appear at the end of this book. Aside from these, other omissions are mostly little known solo artists. and some rock acts who started up in the mid-seventies, whose heyday was post-1976

Early sixties instrumental combos like The Shadows. Tornados and Peter Jay and The Jaywalkers, who musically predated the beat era, where our story begins, are outside the remit of this book, Similarly, those punk acts. getting underway In 19/6, which marked the start of another exciting era are excluded, as are ska, bluebeat, reggae and soul acts
