Don't Be Fooled!! These April 1st Releases Are No Joke!

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Unlimited Love - John Frusciante is back! Those words should be music to the ears of RHCP fans and the fans of Frusciante’s amazing guitar work. Returning from a 10 year absence, his second departure from the band, Frusciante returns and the first single “Black Summer” already bears the fruits of his labor. It sounds instantly more interesting than some of the more textural work of Josh Klinghoffer, who took over for him when he was gone. It’s been a few years since I’ve been excited for a RHCP album, but I am for this one.

Bill Evans - At The Montreux Jazz Festival - One of Bill Evans' best live albums, At The Montreux Jazz Festival won the 1969 Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Album. The legendary pianist is backed here by drummer Jack DeJohnette, who had just joined the trio and would gain renown in later years as a member of Keith Jarrett's Standards Trio. Evans' longtime bassist Eddie Gomez is also extensively featured on this iconic and immortal set. Includes new specially prepared liner notes by Brian Morton.

Can - Monster Movie - Massively Influential Krautrock band Can sees their debut album get a reissue this week. With the sounds of Jimi Hendrix, Captain Beefheart and The Velvet Underground ringing in their ears, Holger Czukay and Irmin Schmidt left behind their careers in academia to form the influential group in the late 60s. Together with Michael Karoli, Jaki Liebezeit and American singer Malcolm Mooney, they recorded their debut album Monster Movie in a castle near Cologne in 1968.

Marvin Gaye - What’s Going On (50th Anniversary Edition) - One of the greatest albums of all time, What’s Going On, gets a 50th Anniversary Edition in April. This pressing features direct-to-analog mastering from the original tapes by Kevin Gray. Included are 4 rare cuts making their vinyl debut, highlighted by the "stripped" version of the title song, plus six mono single mixes and B-sides. Pressed on 180-gram 2 LP in a tip-on heavy stock gatefold jacket with printed sleeves featuring lyrics, track details, a brief essay honoring arranger David Van De Pitte, and main essay by poet Hanif Abdurraqib.

Midnight Oil - Resist - The second LP of the reunited Midnight Oil, Resist follows 2020’s The Makkarata Project and finds the band hitting its stride. So far, the band has said that the upcoming tour for the album will be their last, but you never know these days.
